Back in the Blog Again

I’ve blogged twice before – actually three times if you include a journal I kept for a year in high school. It’s never stuck before. But now I’m excited about it again, but for new reasons this time.

First, I didn’t find any software I really liked before. There were a couple of decent programs out there, but they were Perl based or used files instead of a database and if I was going to do this it should be done in the language I program in, right? I really didn’t want to get my data stuck in something I couldn’t easily manipulate to convert to something else later on. I really didn’t want my data stuck in a service like Live Journal or Blogger.

The next problem was that, for the most part, there’s nothing interesting going on – or so I thought. The daily hum-drum of our lives isn’t that interesting to third-party readers. In fact, it’s not even exciting to read myself. Sure, there are highlights, but there’s no need for a day-in and day-out journal on-line. How would someone build a readership big enough to care if there wasn’t something good every few days? What would make them remember to come back and check my site? Well, the answer to that is RSS. Now that more and more blogs are being read with RSS readers, it’s likely that people will subscribe. Yeah, I thought about doing an email list, but who wants to sign up for something that could lead to spam. With RSS, you just cancel the feed and you are done with it. And, based on previous blogs, I actually did write a bit… 65/year or roughly one every 5 days. Okay, I guess it’s worthwhile even if I only publish something once a week.

To make it more fun, the trackbacks, feedburners, and other neat community features sound exciting and are a lot more likely to get interesting readership that people searching for stuff at random in Google.

Finally, I need a place to talk about little things that don’t deserve an entire web site to themselves. Besides, now that I own a whole bunch of domains and web sites, the renewal bills are getting expensive.

So, welcome to another blog. I’ll give it 30 days or so, and see what happens. If I haven’t forgotten about it, I’ll tell some people about it.
